Good evening ED 17 Presidents,
This evening, NYSUT EVP Jolene DiBrango posted a message on Facebook regarding a survey that has been distributed by SED without any notification to NYSUT. I reached out to her for further clarification. NYSUT became aware of the evidently slanted survey through a local president who shared it with an LRS. As per the message below, we should be receiving guidance on Thursday. I haven't received a survey yet but will be keeping an eye out. In Unity, Tomia Smith Jolene's post on Facebook... "I want to be clear. We want APPR fixed now. We want all state mandates removed. We want a return to local control. If you are a NYSUT teacher and received a survey in your inbox today, please know that we are carefully examining the survey to provide you with the best guidance we can before you start the survey. That information will be available to your local president on Thursday. #solidarity #1u #APPR" BMUST belongs to the Long Island Teachers’ Benevolent Fund (LITBF), which offers a yearly scholarship, (the Len Motisi Memorial Scholarship) to high school seniors graduating this year, who will be attending a post-secondary institution on a full time basis and whose parent is an active teacher in a Long Island local. Many of our members’ sons and daughters have been awarded this scholarship over the years. The attached application must be sent back to me at the BMUST office no later than March 7, 2018 to get my signature on it and for me to send it to LITBF before the deadline of March 14, 2018. We are also putting these forms on our website, www.bmust.org. The application has a section that must be completed by your child’s Guidance Counselor. You must include a copy of the school transcript, with the current GPA on it and include a copy of the SAT or ACT scores. If the transcript does not contain the GPA, your Guidance Counselor must submit a statement with the scores. So please fill the form in as soon as possible and forward it to me through inter-office mail. Good luck. Mark
Good afternoon. Attached please find a Scholarship Announcement/Application for students impacted by ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease).
The Lawrence TA has gone 7 years without a contract. Efforts have been made recently to shame their Board of Education on Facebook and Twitter. They're asking fellow unionists and friends to follow them on Facebook (Lawrence Teachers Association). Just recently their Board of Education asked to resume negotiations so they feel the shaming on Facebook and Twitter has had a positive effect.
Please join them on Facebook and Twitter as soon as possible.
Please read the following message from Jennifer Landry - the BMUST chair of the JPPC:
Feedback from parent-teacher conferences was discussed at the December 14, 2017 JPPC meeting. BMUST is looking for input from our members concerning the timing and implementation of the conferences. Below you will find a link to a short survey concerning the conferences. Your input will help guide our discussion at the next JPPC meeting. If you would kindly submit the linked form by Friday, January 19 - this will allow time for us to work through your input before the next meeting. Thank you in advance for your time and input. November 21, 2017 has been chosen as SRP (School Related Professionals) Recognition Day in New York State. This is a day to remind our paraprofessionals that we know how deserving they are of this recognition. They share in our successes as well as in the frustrations that we all face. While their contract is different from that of our teachers, the paraprofessionals are and will continue to be, an important part of BMUST and an integral part of the Bellmore-Merrick community.
I want to take this opportunity to personally thank our paraprofessionals for all that they do and to thank their President, Cynthia Leung and Vice-President, Catherine Sheehan for their hard work. Your efforts do not go unnoticed. Please take some time to let the paras that you work with know how much you appreciate their efforts. Dear Colleagues, Please see attached a SAVE THE DATE for an opportunity to explore the vast world of adult supports and service for individuals with special learning needs and their families. Notable is that this year’s event will include recreational, leisure and socialization opportunities. Finally, please note the separate “Student Invitation” attached. What a wonderful way to make the key players in this process feel welcome! Please feel free to share as appropriate with your families . Note the event is open to students, families and professionals from Long Island. Please join us to hear your students success stories .Have a Happy Thanksgiving. Hope to see you there.
