Hello BMUST,Earlier this year my mother died of an ALS like disease called Bulbar Palsy in October. She loved to run, and last year completed the 10k as part of the LI Marathon. She had held off putting in a feeding tube just so she could run in the race. Although she fell after six miles, she got back up and with some assistance was able to complete the race. My family has been organizing a fund raiser in her honor. This year my family will be running various races in her honor during the LI marathon of races weekend. If you would like to, I have placed a link below.
http://web.alsa.org/site/TR/3rdParty/GreaterNewYork?px=7342558&pg=personal&fr_id=12682 Brian Moeller I have also placed a link of a video my brother created with music she liked, family pictures and of her crossing the finish line last year in her last race. It is a promotional five minutes video as to why we are doing this if you want to check it out. http://tinyurl.com/CarolMoellerVideoRight now we are the top fund raiser for ALS NY. We even were the lead story in the ALS newsletter which I copied below. "Team We Are Carol Moeller" Takes on the 2017 Long Island Marathon to Help Fight ALS In an amazing demonstration of strength and courage, three months after her ALS diagnosis Carol Moeller finished her final 10k race at the 2016 Long Island Marathon. “She couldn’t speak, was having trouble walking, couldn’t swallow, and she delayed her feeding tube operation so she could compete in the 10k race. She did it and she didn’t give up. She was a week away from having a feeding tube inserted into her body, but still pushed herself into completing a 10k,” Carol’s son, Kevin Moeller said. Carol’s other son Dennis Moeller added, “Mom was in the middle and we surrounded her like secret service. She fell twice during the race. A mile before the finish line, we helped her up and my brother and I each had an arm around her. We told her to slow down and she just moaned the word, RUN! She finished the race and it was really special.” This year the Moeller family will be running the Long Island Marathon, on May 7th, in honor of their mother Carol who passed away last October. “I know it would make her feel good that I’ve been training the way she always did. We owe it to her. We saw her run with very limited abilities and I said if my mom can run 6 miles while already losing her ability to smile, stand up straight, or to cry, there is no way I can’t run the 26 miles. There is no quit in any of us,” Dennis said.Running was always a part of Carol’s life, so the tribute is more than fitting. “She would wake up at 4:30 in the morning and run 6 to 10 miles, 6 days a week, and be home in time to make breakfast, get us to school, and go to work. That was her routine for 30 years,” Dennis said. “Running is the only way to honor her, in the way she truly deserves.” The Moeller family is hoping this run will bring with it support, because their goal now is to raise awareness, and bring in funds for research. So far “Team We Are Carol Moeller” is closing in on its $20,000 dollar initial goal. “My mom kept asking for something to help her, some magic pill that would take this all away. And you know, hopefully through these efforts we are going to help someone, somewhere, come up with that magic pill.” Kevin said. But until that day the Moeller family says they will continue to run for ALS and continue to fight for a cure. Dennis said when he needs motivation to keep on going he just hears the words his son told him during one of his training sessions, “Daddy, I think Grandma is cheering for you from the sky.” If you would like to show your support and donate to our Team We Are Carol Moeller head to tinyurl.com/CarolMoeller Thank you for all of your support this year. It has been nothing short of amazing for me and my entire family. Thank you again, Brian Moeller The Kiwanis Club of the Bellmores is raising money for the community with an Annual Pancake Breakfast to be held at Applebee's. All are welcome. Don't take money from our neighborhood public schools!!!! CLICK HERE -> https://mac.nysut.org/call-your-republican-state-senator-2 @nysut More Info: I am outraged by your decision to bring Betsy DeVos-style charter proposals to New York, as laid out in the Senate one-house budget. Your plan to unfreeze charter tuitions and give charters more money for staff and building aid will drain $350 million from New York's public schools and will send that money to corporate charter bank accounts. That's money that otherwise would go to our neighborhood/ district public schools. This drain on public schools will only get worse because you want to eliminate the current charter cap, creating an unlimited number of unregulated charter schools. You cannot let this happen. Protect the public schools in your district. Do not be the one to bring Betsy DeVos' failed education agenda to New York. **** Be sure to include a special call to Senate Majority Leader John J. Flanagan at 631-361-2154! **** Stop the DeVostation to New York School Districts This chart shows how much 20 selected school districts – and your students -- would lose if Senate Republicans are successful. The Senate GOP wants to unfreeze charter tuition payments; require your local school districts to double-pay by absorbing the cost of charter school support staff; and provide new statewide building aid. This new giveaway to charters would come at the expense of the state's needed investment in Foundation Aid, which is used to benefit all school districts and help the vast majority of students who attend neighborhood public schools. Member Benefits is hosting a no cost Pre-Retirement Workshop for All Members at the Nassau Regional Office. Please note that the rally that was scheduled on Friday, March 24 in Suffolk County at State Senate Majority Leader, John Flanagan's office has been postponed until further notice.
The rally in Nassau County at State Senator Elaine Phillips office at 252 Mineola Blvd. is still on for Friday, March 24 from 4-5 pm. Please let your head building representative know if you will be going. Signs will be provided. Public education needs your help in fighting the one house budget that is redirecting millions to charter schools. If at all possible, please attend one of the rallies listed below. There is one in Nassau and one in Suffolk.
In addition, especially if these individuals are your senators, make a call to demand that they support public education and stop giving money to charter schools. State Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan- Long Island number- 631-361-2154 Albany number- 518-455-2071 State Senator Elaine Phillips- Long Island number- 516-746-5924 Albany number- 518-453265 Don't be fooled that this will not impact "schools like ours". A parent in our District can choose to attend a charter and if accepted, our District pays. With increased funding and the charter cap lifted, charters will be popping up with different "specialties" in order to attract attention. This isn't about improving public education-it's about profiting off of public education dollars. We must stay vigilant. In Unity, Tomia Smith ED-17 RALLY After faxing and calling since the Senate Republicans one house budget was released last week, NYSUT is now asking us to ramp up the pressure on several Senate Republicans around the state given their position on handing out millions in additional aid to charters and removing the cap on charters. Its time to let them Hear our Voice. This Friday, March 24th at 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM Suffolk-rally in front of State Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan- 260 E Main St #203, Smithtown, NY 11787 Nassau- Rally in front of State Senator Elaine Phillips - 252 Mineola Boulevard, Mineola, NY 11501-2421 The New York State Senates one house budget bill promotes the corporate charter school industry at the expense of our public schools. Some of the most egregious parts of this budget bill include: Increase the dollars the local school district has to pay for each charter enrollee. Eliminates the cap on charter schools; fueling expansion. Increase the amount of money to faculty at charters which is in addition to the extra per student increase they will receive this year. Building aid (for charters) increases is expanded beyond NYC. This all comes at a cost to our schools and more importantly the students - our children - that attend. Presently the public schools are owed millions of dollars from Albany and the charter schools are sitting on unlimited reserves (something public schools cannot do). Please come with signs and your voices!!! Jeff Friedman Long Island Political Organizer NYSUT 516-670-7834 jfriedma@nysutmail.org I am very pleased to announce the recipients of this years' BMUST awards, chosen by their peers in the buildings and by members of the Board of Trustees.
