Dear BMUST Members,
I hope this email finds you and your loved ones in good health. As you probably know, school budget votes and school board elections are quickly approaching. This year, voting will take place by absentee ballot. All qualified voters will receive a ballot in the mail, along with a postage-paid return envelope, from their school districts. The completed ballots must be received by the District Clerk’s office by 5:00 PM on June 9th, which means you should mail it back a few days before to ensure it gets there in time. This year’s budget vote is extremely important, especially since the COVID-19 recession could be devastating for school funding. We are not only asking our members to pledge to vote YES for their local school budgets, but to encourage others to mail in their YES votes, too. Since the pandemic has disrupted our usual phone-banking campaign, BMUST and NYSUT are taking a number of steps to get out the vote to pass Bellmore-Merrick’s 2020-21 budget: 1. NYSUT has scheduled robocalls to its members. 2. BMUST is sending postcards to likely YES voters living in the district. 3. BMUST and the component Bellmore/Merrick elementary school unions have purchased full-page ads in the Bellmore/Merrick Herald Life newspapers. In addition, NYSUT has released its school board candidate endorsements for Long Island, which is attached to this email. Please let me know if you have any questions, and make sure you mail in your vote by June 9th! Sincerely, Dennis Urban Political Action Committee Dear BMUST Family:
We are presently forming our committees for the 2020-2021 school year. Our committees are responsible for some of the most important advocacy and work done to build, secure, and maintain our professional lives and careers as educators in BMCHSD. A description of the work done by each committee can be found at www.bmust.org/committees. If you are interested in serving on a committee, or would like to continue serving on a particular committee, please submit this form no later than Friday, June 12th. If you would like more information about our committees, please reach out to me, a building rep., or a current committee rep. Thank you in advance for your time and your interest. Bill Morris 2nd Vice President [email protected] -- Rob Walsh President Colleagues, I hope this note finds you all well. This email is meant for those of you in various states of obtaining certain certifications or extensions with the State Education Department. To quote from the NYSUT guidance memo that discusses this matter: In response to the COVID-19 crisis, the State Education Department (SED) has amended several regulations that govern certification in NY. These amendments may help individuals with certificates that expire in August 2020, have applied/are applying for certificates or certificate extensions before September 1, 2020, as well as special education teachers who teach in a special class. Attached to this email is the aforementioned NYSUT guidance memo. Here a link to the NYSED webpage outlining these changes. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns. Stay well, Rob ![]()

I hope this email finds you well. Last week, the BMUST Executive Committee distributed the first round of donations to all of the applicants. We want to thank those of you who generously donated to the fund. Tomorrow, which is "Giving Tuesday", we will kick off the second round of collection. Usually held the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, "Giving Tuesday" is being launched on May 5 in response to the unprecedented need caused by COVD-19. In considering a charity or cause to donate to, please consider our relief fund. No amount is too small. Below are replies we received from some of the recipients of the first round of collections: "Please tell me how I can thank all of my union brothers and sisters appropriately. My family and I are beyond grateful for your generosity." "Oh my goodness!! Thank you so very much !! You have no idea how much this will help... thank you again for your kindness and extreme generosity!!" "Bellmore/Merrick has always been like a family to me and I thank you from the bottom of my heart." We will collect donations through June 15. Like last time, you can send your donation via Venmo to @BMUST. If you do not have a Venmo account, you can send a check made payable to BMUST to 1260 Meadowbrook Road, Merrick, NY 11566 . Please put "Coronavirus Relief Fund" in the comment section. The application is still available here. If your situation has changed or you were hesitant to complete it earlier, please fill it out. Here is the link to register: https://studentloans.nysut.org/webinars Thank you! -- Rob Walsh President Dear Colleagues,
I hope this email finds you well. In addition to disrupting our everyday life, the global pandemic has caused economic uncertainty for millions of working people. This includes members of our own union - teachers, nurses, PPS staff, paraprofessionals. To support those members, BMUST has set up a relief fund aimed at providing some financial assistance. Members who need support may include those whose spouse/partner has lost income from loss of employment or significantly reduced employment; those who are losing a significant addition to their income due to reduction in spring or summer school or camp programs they ordinarily rely on; those who need to pay for at home care or expensive medical equipment for themselves or immediate family members; those who experience a personal or household emergency during this time. The main purpose of my letter is two-fold. First, we are seeking donations to the fund. No amount is too small! If you would like to donate, you can send your donation via Venmo to @BMUST. If you do not have a Venmo account, you can send a check made payable to BMUST to 1260 Meadowbrook Road, Merrick, NY 11566 . Please put "Coronavirus Relief Fund" in the comment section. Secondly, if you need financial assistance, please complete the application found here. Applicant information will be confidential as noted on the form. While we are committed to offering support as long as it is needed, we are asking you to submit your donation or application by Wednesday, April 29. Please do not hesitate to email me at [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns. -- Brad Seidman Treasurer/Membership Coordinator Bellmore-Merrick United Secondary Teachers Last week, Congress passed the CARES Act, formally named ‘‘Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act’’. As a result, there are a few items affecting health accounts (FSAs, HRAs and HSAs).
