Please see the letter NYSUT sent to SED highlighting our concerns with the draft ESSA regulations which can be very harmful to districts with high opt-out rates like Bellmore-Merrick. Our ED 17 representative Tomia Smith from Massapequa sent out a sample letter we can send to SED expressing our shared concerns about the potential harm these ESSA regulations could have to our district. Please consider using it as a template or emailing your own letter to SED. In solidarity, Mark ____________________________________________________________________________________ I strongly disagree with the June 2018 ESSA draft regulations and ask that they be modified to address the following concerns:
I strongly encourage you to address these concerns. MEMORANDUM TO: NYSUT Board of Directors FROM: Jolene DiBrango DATE: June 5, 2018 RE: ESSA Letter We sent the attached letter to SED on last Tuesday highlighting our strong concerns with the ESSA regulations. The concerns we raise about the treatment of opt outs could have a significant impact on any locals in your area with high opt outs. Please share our letter with any of your locals with high opt out rates and urge them to send a comment letter to SED at [email protected] Thank you for your help on this important issue. The Commissioner and the Board of Regents must hear from teachers in the field about the impact SED’s choices will have on their students and schools. In solidarity, Jolene ![]()

It is important to keep the pressure up. We have to get the APPR bill to the floor. This Friday June 1, we will be gathering outside Senator Marcellino's office 250 Townsend Square, Oyster Bay at 4 PM....... either to thank him or to persuade him with signs and chants and bad publicity to push the bill on the floor. The flyer is attached. Our pressure is working, please try to attend. Mark Steinberg President ![]()
Dear Member,
This afternoon the high schools will receive the BMUST t-shirt and the middle schools will receive them tomorrow at their faculty meeting. These shirts were ordered for you by your union. We ask that you wear the t-shirt to work on Friday, May 4th. Although that day bears no specific importance, we’ve selected it as OUR day to demonstrate our unity and pride in unionism. As we await the pending decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in the Janus case and witness the thousands of teachers demonstrating in different parts of the nation for fair pay for teachers and professional rights for us all, let's wear the t-shirts to recognize the importance of our union rights and as a promise to each other to keep our local, state, and federal unions strong in the face of attacks from political institutions and outsiders. If you did not order a t-shirt and would still like to order one, please contact Kim in the BMUST office or see your head building representative. Thanks, Brad Seidman Treasurer/Membership Coordinator he Kiwanis Club of the Bellmores is raising money for the community with an Annual Pancake Breakfast to be held at Applebee's. All are welcome. Please see the attachment for further details. ![]()
Eileen Davidson (formerly Flood) was a member of our BMCHSD family from 2008-2010. During her short time here, she positively impacted students, athletes, and faculty alike. She was an asset to our community and was loved and respected by all. Sadly, Eileen’s husband, FDNY Lieutenant Michael R. Davidson, made the ultimate sacrifice on March 22, 2018 when he battled a fifth alarm blaze in Harlem, NY. This devastating, unimaginable loss has left Eileen without her husband and her 4 young children ages 1 to 7 without their father. Please consider donating any monetary contribution so that we, Eileen’s BMCHSD family, can assist the Davidsons during this incredibly difficult time.
Cash may be given to your Head Building Representative this week. **High Priority
Three regional offices (including both Nassau and Suffolk) and one local union office were the subjects of attempted stings on Tuesday sponsored by Project Veritas. As you may recall, Project Veritas produces secretly recorded undercover audio and video encounters with leaders and workers in public sector unions and various academic, governmental and social service organizations, purporting to expose allegedly abusive or illegal behavior by employees and/or representatives of those organizations. In an effort to make unions look bad, they selectively edit videos to take comments out of context and create the false impression that people said or did things they did not actually say or do. In order to protect yourself and your members against these dishonest sting operations, please regularly practice the following safety procedures at all union meetings and events, both formal and informal: ● Be alert to suspicious behavior or encounters in private and public settings. ● Report any suspicious behavior or encounters to your LRS. ● When solicited for advice or counsel, always make sure you know the identity of the person you are talking to. Verify membership if the person soliciting your help or advice is not known to you personally. ● If you have your own union office, be sure any staff person working there is aware of these procedures. ● Always assume that someone may be recording a conversation with you and remain professional in all of your responses. ● End conversations that make you uncomfortable or suspicious. ● Post signs at all union events stating: Members Only. Making recordings without the authorization of the union is not permitted. Make everyone show a badge or ID to enter. ● Remind members to be cautious when having conversations people they do not know in public settings like coffees shops or bars.
