You may change your beneficiary at any time. If you have any questions, call the union office at ext. 1068. Designation of Benefits Form Sincerely, Rob Walsh 1st Vice President January 6, 2015
Dear NYSUT Members: All NYSUT members will be receiving their new membership cards this month as part of a special mailing that will include information pertaining to the core benefits that NYSUT provides to its membership. This mailing will also include a letter from Martin Messner, Secretary-Treasurer of NYSUT and Chairperson of the NYSUT Member Benefits Trust. Click the following link to view Martin's letter -- http://issuu.com/mbnewsletter/docs/membership_mailing_1-6-15?e=4255078/10809570. To view this document in page reader mode after clicking the link, click on the third button from the right in the black menu bar at the top of the page. I encourage you to take the time to read Martin’s letter and learn how you could potentially save significant money by participating in NYSUT Member Benefits-endorsed programs & services. Find out how much Martin saved when he called to inquire about a number of services, including auto & homeowners insurance, life insurance, home heating oil, vacation plans, movie tickets, and much more. The true merits of being a union member include better contracts, safer working conditions, fair pay, political activism, etc.; however, many members may not realize that there are additional benefits to being a union member. I encourage you to consider the many programs & services endorsed by NYSUT Member Benefits and inquire about your future potential savings. Thank you for your time. If you know a school student with special needs who may be eligible for services in addition to what they already receive at school in order to reach their full potential, you cannot miss the Eighth Annual Fair for Transitioning Students with Disabilities: from Eligibility to Employment and Beyond! hosted by the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District SEPTA and Community Parent Center on January 6th , 2015, at Sanford H. Calhoun High School,1786 State St. in Merrick, New York, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. (In the event of inclement weather we have a rain date of January 13th) This event has become one of the premiere transition events on Long Island, attracting over 200 attendees and now over 75 service agencies presenting a step by step overview of the transitioning process, from eligibility determination through employment and supported living options for people with special needs. As in the past, the evening will begin with open registration followed by an all-inclusive performance by Express Yourself! and keynote speakers who will add a very personal perspective to the process. Also, as in the past, participating agencies and others will have information tables open throughout the event.
The Transition Fair will have a workshop format with targeted presentations on a wide variety of subjects from self-determination to special needs trusts to social security benefits to Medicaid and Non-Medicaid services by experts in the field of disabilities rights and services. The very popular Student Workshop will return as well, with presentations by Bellmore-Merrick student/alumni who have already taken part in pre-vocational and vocational experiences, followed by a guided scavenger hunt through the information tables ending with a party with prizes. Please take 60 seconds & CLICK HERE to ACT NOW to STOP the NYS Board of Regents and Commissioner John King from changing regulations to mandate stand-alone field tests that have historically been voluntary. Field tests are experimental questions that Pearson, NYS's contracted educational testing company, uses to "test" new questions to be used for future tests. Over the last several years, NYS standardized tests have VASTLY grown to NINE hours of testing each year for grades three through eight. In these tests, approximately 25% have field test questions already embedded in them. Astoundingly, the NYS Education Department (NYSED) previously admitted stand-alone field tests are "statistically unreliable". Again, we urge you to take IMMEDIATE ACTION by CLICKING HERE to send a letter to the Commissioner of Education John King, Deputy Commissioner Ken Wagner, Board of Regents, Governor Cuomo, your Assembly member/Senator, and the NYSED public comment email which is open for only a short period of time. Thank you on behalf of NYS Allies for Public Education.
